A dental emergency is any oral health condition that is causing you serious discomfort, pain, or bleeding. This includes a wide variety of issues including dental trauma (knocked-out, loose, broken teeth), cuts to the gums, cheeks, and lips, serious toothaches, missing or pulled-out dental work, just to name a few. If you’ve lost a tooth, pick it up by the top (crown) and rinse it with warm water. Put it in a container of cold milk to keep it moist. Pulled-out dental work can be recovered, rinsed, and placed in a plastic bag to bring with you to our office.
Depending on your issue, you can take steps like absorbing blood with gauze or cotton balls, taking medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, or using an ice pack to help with pain and swelling. However, make sure you come to our office as soon as you can for permanent treatment.
In some cases, immediate care is required to prevent further complications and save your tooth. A knocked-out tooth, for example, needs to be splinted into place within 1-2 hours, or it will die and we will not be able to save the tooth. By getting immediate care, you can avoid complications that can cause you more pain, and end up costing you more time and money at the dentist, too.
