At Goldstein, Garber, & Salama, we're proud to help patients in Atlanta achieve beautiful, healthy smiles through comprehensive dental & orthodontic treatment. We understand that every patient is different, which is why we take a customized approach to dental care, working to design a personalized treatment plan for each and every patient. These treatment plans may encompass cosmetic dentistry, orthodontic treatment with braces or Invisalign, and more. We're proud to offer a wide range of cosmetic dental treatments at our Atlanta dentist's office, but if you're looking to correct crooked teeth and achieve a healthier, more beautiful smile, orthodontic braces are often the best option.
What Are Braces?
Orthodontic braces – normally just called "braces" – are an orthodontic appliance that's used to straighten and correct the alignment of the teeth. Traditional braces consist of small metal brackets that are cemented to the front of the teeth, then a thin, springy metal archwire that runs through the brackets and works to straighten the teeth. Braces can be used to correct virtually any form of malocclusion (bad bite), including everything ranging from crooked teeth to overbites and underbites.
How Do Braces Work?
Braces are placed during a simple procedure, and they require periodic adjustments throughout treatment. During your consultation, your Atlanta orthodontist will carefully examine your teeth and take diagnostic tests of your mouth including x-rays and impressions to properly diagnose any problems in your bite. Then, we'll carefully create your treatment plan based on this diagnosis.
Next, we'll bring you in for an appointment to place your braces. Your orthodontist will carefully place each bracket on your teeth, using dental cement and a special curing light to harden the cement and firmly affix the bracket. Then, your orthodontist will thread the archwire into the brackets, fixing it in place using a series of small elastic ties.
After placing your braces, we'll bring you in for adjustment appointments roughly every 4 to 6 weeks. Treatment time depends on the severity of your orthodontic condition, but for most patients, it lasts between 12 months and 2.5 years.
Who Can Get Braces?
Virtually anyone can get orthodontic braces – if you're dissatisfied with your smile, chances are that braces can help. Braces are most common for adolescents; the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children get an orthodontic evaluation at age 7, as this is the first age we can spot malocclusions. However, if you're an adult longing for a straighter new smile, don't worry: we can move healthy teeth at any age, so you're never too old for braces.
How to Take Care of Braces
During treatment, you'll need to make a few modifications to your lifestyle to take care of your braces. You'll need to avoid any foods that are hard, crunchy, sticky, or full of sugar: things like nuts, ice, taffy, gum, and sugary sodas should all be avoided. In addition, stringent oral hygiene is crucial during treatment with braces, as your teeth are extra vulnerable to decay during treatment.
