What To Do If You Broke Your Tooth

Goldstein Garber & Salama is proud to be your choice when you’re looking for first class wellness and cosmetic dentistry in and around Atlanta, GA. Our wide range of services allow us to treat a plethora of dental problems and illnesses. One such area we have expertise in is the treatment of chipped teeth.

Chipped Teeth

Chipped teeth actually account for the majority of dental injuries. These injuries are usually minor and easily repaired if treated quickly. Chipped teeth are often repaired by either reattaching the broken piece of enamel or bonding a toothcolored filling or crown to the spot where the injury occurred. The process of bonding uses a toothcolored composite resin to attach the chipped part back to the rest of the tooth. With the usage of an ultraviolet light, this material hardens and seals the piece to the tooth.

If you happen to chip a tooth, please come in to Goldstein Garber & Salama as soon as possible so we can repair your tooth before it gets worse.

Major Types of Chips or Cracks

While chipped teeth are usually only minor dental injuries, a more severe injury, such as a crack can sometimes require other types of treatment. Here are a few examples of the cracks that may happen to your teeth.

Craze lines: These are tiny cracks that only affect the outer enamel. These are very common in adult teeth and don’t serve as any concern outside of appearance.

Fractured cusp: This occurs when part of a tooth’s chewing surface breaks off. We at Goldstein Garber & Salama can place a filling or a crown over the tooth in order to protect it.

Cracked tooth: A cracked tooth is when there’s a crack that extends vertically toward the root. It’s important to come to our office immediately to get it fixed; the longer you wait, the deeper the crack can get and the more severe this situation is. A root canal treatment can save the tooth if it’s treated early enough, but if the crack extends below the gum line, then the tooth will need to be extracted.
